Afro Mule

various Afro Blue preformances
note: this is the second edition of this compilation, see the first edition
sound quality: 5

CD 1
  • On Afro Blue [0:54]
10/23/99, interview with the band by Mike Price, Joel Davies and Brian Fox. This will definitely let you know how the band approaches this tune.
  • Afro Blue [4:38]
    7/30/97, 8x10, Baltimore, MD
    First version, acoustic.
  • Afro Blue [28:38]
3/15/99, The Odeon Concert Club, Cleveland, OH
Epic version with Derek, Yonrico, and Bill McKay.
  • Afro Blue [14:54]
7/31/99, Masquerade Music Park, Atlanta, GA
Sax, keys, and percussion from Galactic.
  • Afro Blue [24:49]
    4/11/00, Granada Theatre, Lawrence, KS
Last version with Woody. :-( This is a fairly rare recording, due to a lot of technical problems at that show, as Woody' bass was killing the PA system. The bass was, but Woody still dominates this one. Oh yes, John Scofield and Derek guest on this, and take it in some nice new directions, along with a "Footprints" tease.
CD 2
  • Afro Blue [10:52]
    8/28/99, Waterloo Village, Stanhope, NJ
Sax, keys and percussion from Galactic. Although relatively short, this is one of the most flawless versions I've ever heard.
  • Afro Blue [26:06]
5/23/98, The Outback Lodge, Charlottesville, VA
Acoustic with Tim Reynolds and a "The Eleven" jam. Dazzling.
  • Afro Blue [31:30]
3/19/99, Theater of Living Arts, Philadelphia, PA
One of the other classic versions with Derek, Yonrico, and Bill McKay.
CD 3
  • Afro Blue [6:11]
11/12/97, Peabody's Down Under, Cleveland, OH
    Early electric trio version.
  • Afro Blue [24:58]
10/31/99, House of Blues, New Orleans, LA
With Deep Bananna Blackout. Not only is this a classic with the addition of horns, but Fuzzy's guitar solo is one of the best "Afro Blue" solos I've ever heard.
  • Afro Blue [13:37]
    10/30/99, Stubb's Barbeque, Austin, TX
One of the longest trio-only acoustic versions.
  • Afro Blue [25:30]
3/27/99, The Webster Theatre, Hartford, CT
Another of the Dererk, Yonrico, Bill versions, this one had some miscues that "unfortunately" forced Allen into a long, meaty bass solo. Wow.
CD 4
  • Afro Blue [17:25]
    9/24/98, The Bayou, Washington, DC
    With Kevin Hansen from Huffamoose.
  • Afro Blue [8:33]
4/2/98, Jukebox, TV, New Orleans, LA
Acoustic with Brian Stoltz (guitar) and James Rivers (tenor sax).
  • Afro Blue [21:02]
    5/8/99, Stubb's Barbeque, Austin, TX
Fiddle, keys, and percussion from String Cheese Incident. Great Version.
  • Afro Blue [24:54]
1/29/99, Chili Pepper, Ft. Lauderdale, FL
With Eddie Harsh (keys) and Audley Freed. I think this is the most underrated version they've ever done. Eddie's keyboards are incredible, and this one really swirls.
CD 5
  • Afro Blue [16:58]
    12/30/97, Trace Hall, Tupelo, MS
The first great jamming version, with Dr. Dan on Keys and a nice Les Brers tease.
  • Afro Blue [10:45]
    2/27/98, Roxy Theater, Atlanta, GA
Chuck Leavell on organ - a taste of things to come?
  • Afro Blue [27:58]
  • Thirdstone [16:29]
9/28/98, 5 Points South Music Hall, Birmingham, AL
Tracks 3 & 4: the 45 minute jam with Oteil on 2nd bass that may be, for my money, the best Mule jam ever.
CD 6
  • Afro Blue [13:28]
3/5/98, Irving Plaza, New York, NY
    With Bernie Worrell on keys.
  • Afro Blue [31:20]
3/26/98, The Catalyst, Santa Cruz, CA
Another insanely long acoustic version with Tim Reynolds.
  • Afro Blue [23:16]
    7/24/98, Polaris Amphitheatre, Columbus, OH
HORDE Workshop. This may have had more players on it than the "Live With A Little Help From Our Friends" version. John Popper and Drew Zing for starters.
